Z'Liners Challenge: Part 2

After last week's positive and encouraging response towards the Z'Liners Women Challenge,
this week will see yet another Z'Liners competition.

The Z'Liners Open Challenge.
It's going to be held at Dalat International Indoor Hall again, 20 September 2008.
To put it simply, it's a free-for-all, men and women together.
Put the right mix of players to form your own most deadliest team.
Well, deadliest would be an overstatement.

For the UniHawks, we will have the likes of Mervin and Kevin back in the game with us.
These dinasours of USM have decided to give it another go... :P
It'll be interesting to see which of the UniHawks will go the furthest.
In any case, let's all have fun this weekend.

Women's Day

It was a Saturday filled with excitement and anticipation, not to mention a whole lot of screaming. :P

The day started off with the Junior Floorball Challenge and later on with the Women Floorball Challenge.
It was going to be a long and gruelling day for most of us but the excitement kept everyone going.

In total, there were 8 women's team.
4 in group A and another 4 in group B.
The group stage proved to be an easy task for the UniHawks, soaring up to the top spot by winning every single game at hand.
The other two teams to watch out for were Innebabes and Contact Sugar as they topped the table in group B.

The UniHawks faced Contact Sugar in the semi-final round.
Being pressured for the first time in the competition, they seemed to have lost focus and could not get the shots in.
Contact Sugar played a full press game, the UniHawks were draining out on stamina.
Having won every single game in the group stage, losing in the semis would be a big blowout.
The pressure was intense.
Contact Sugar took advantage of that and scored the first and only goal of the match.
Contact Sugar went through to the finals, the UniHawks had to settle for the 2nd runner up match.

As disappointing as it was, I believe our girls played really well in the competition.
They eventually won the following match and got the 2nd runner up spot.

The final saw two teams from group B battling out against each other once more -
Contact Sugar and the Innebabes.
After a long tiring afternoon with the very little juice of energy left in your body,
it all comes down to this.

Pressure.
Tension.
Anticipation.

What will you do?

Only one thing to do-lar - SCORE!!!
Both team wants to win real bad...
All kinda peculiar moves came out... :P

The face off was brutal with uneased tension...

But only one will emerge as the champs...
Only one will celebrate...

CONTACT SUGAR!

Contact Sugar proved to be the toughest competitor, beating whatever that was in their way to clench the winning medal.
Congrats to Contact Sugar! :)

The Z'Liners-PFA Floorball challenge 2008, a joint effort by team Ztec, Frontliners and Penang Floorball Associate, will kick off tomorrow, 12 September 2008, with the women's challenge at Dalat International School Indoor Hall from 12pm to 6pm.

The jitter's building...

Who shall emerge as the strongest, the fittest and the most fearsome team?

You know, there's a saying that goes "hell has no fury like a woman's scorned"... :)

Donning the Flag

I can still recall vividly the very first time I held a floorball stick at our first training site, Cahaya Gemilang court, while being trained under the watchful eyes of my first floorball coach, Sarah Ng.
That was almost 2 years back.

Fast forward 2 years later.

Here I am, still holding a floorball stick and on top of that, had the privilege to put on the national jersey for the 2nd time.

I recently participated with a few others in the Asia Pacific Floorball Championship 2008, better known as APAC, in Perth, Australia.
Having been to last year's APAC in Singapore, I knew what I was getting myself into -
High-level competition, nothing compared to what we have been playing in Malaysia.
Nonetheless, I knew I wanted to go from the very beginning.
Let me explain.

Initially, what drew me to floorball was the idea and fascination of representing our country.
Being coached by a national player at my first ever training session, I was truly inspired.
After playing and fooling around with floorball for a couple of months, I felt I had a knack for the sport and decided to take it seriously.
I then set a goal for myself to get into the Penang state team first, then work my way into the national.
It wasn't much about the glory and the idea of winning medals.
I never really was driven by medals anyway.
I was driven more by the virtues behind a team.
I guess you can say that that is partially why I decided to stick around in Penang for a little longer.

APAC 2008 opened my eyes to several things.
Firstly, my own personal vision of floorball.

Like I said, initially, getting into the national team was a goal, a target set by me and for me to achieve.
But it was not a vision.
I do, however, share a common vision with my club of course.
That's more of a "corporate" vision.
On a more personal aspect of what I want to see floorball happening in Malaysia,
I was left standing clueless.

The simple fact is this;
We got whooped in Perth. Big time.
We just could not compete with other teams.
To put it simply, we were outclassed.

So, the question I asked myself now is,

"What now?"

I mean, yea, I have achieved my goal in representing our country.
Twice.
But to what purpose? To what avail?
Was there any purpose in the first place?
I don't really know.
As I evaluated myself as a player and as a person, I knew that there must be something far greater, a vision or a mission that is driving me to the addiction of this sport.
I admit, it was embarrassing getting thrashed and painful to see people giving disappointing head shake all around the arena.
It was not a nice feeling being the underdog each time we stepped into the court.
People have asked me,

"Would you go to APAC again if you knew the outcome was going to be like this?"

I pondered and hesitated to answer for a little while.
Recollection of what happened before, during and after APAC 2008 came flooding into my head.
I paused, smiled and answered,

"Yes, I would."

In that brief hesitation, I recalled a friend who once told me;

"Despite all that - the thrashing, the criticism, the disappointment -
remember this one thing,
'Let nothing move you'."

I knew there and then,
what my vision was.

Woman players can play in both categories.
RM 70 per team.
Minimum 5 and maximum 7 players in a team (goalkeeper included).
4v4 challenge with a goalkeeper on each side.
Please inform Wai Wai (for the alumni) and Gary (for the USM students) by 5th September 2008, if you are interested. Please specify, if you want to play in both categories (only applies to the women).

Recapturing the Vision

As training is gradually picking up its pace, the number of players are slowly multiplying as well.
Being present at the training session for the first time since the semester re-opened (and this time not as a student but rather as an outsider looking in), I had mixed feelings.
Peaceful yet... Weird.

Yes, peaceful.

Being the first few batch of players when this club first started off, it was really relieving to know and to see that this club is still blooming.
More importantly so, to know that it is moving towards the direction we envisioned it to be.
Having said that, it felt rather odd though - being an outsider this time around.
Being there at the training but yet not quite there.
Weird.

Wai Wai, our Team Manager highlighted three important aspects, or should I say three important core values in which our club will be moulding our players to be;

Character
Competence
Commitment

Well, it's self-explanatory.
Three simple words but yet difficult actions to execute consistently.

As I stood there at the all-too-familiar-basketball court in my working attire and seeing the juniors training their hearts out, they reminded me of a greater purpose beyond that of the game itself.
In them, I saw the Vision that drove me to this passion.

So long as Underdawgs are growing, the vision will be realised...
Sooner or later...
It will.

1st Practice!

Our very first official floorball training went pretty well. We actually have Coach Edward coaching us!! It was super super cool as we did different drills compared to the last time. Coach took things easy on us this week since there were quite a number of newbies *yay yay yay!!* who joined us. We also got a bunch of exchange students from Sweden, Finland, Switzerland and also the Netherlands to join us. Hopefully they will be coming regularly =)

Heya guys!! After a nice long break, floorball practice is gonna start soon!! Excited? Things are gonna be a lil different starting this semester since our dear captain, Sarah has graduated.. no worries though because she still will be with us as our Unihawks captain!! Our new captain for the Underdawgs this semester will be *drummroll* Gary for the guys and Yunn Yee for the gals!!

ok.. enough of my ramblings =) for those who have been waiting for our trainings to start, it will be on the 24th July 2008 (week 3) same time same place (Bakti Basketball Court).. Be there!!

PTPY 2008!

Floorball has never been so individualistic in its nature until last weekend.

Play in a Team, Play for Yourself (PTPY)

What's that?
Well, trust Contact Sports in coming up with such funky names for a competition and an approach to floorball no one would ever of in this lifetime. *wink*

The concept is rather simple but the layout is a whole different story.
Players are placed into several groups, 6 in each group.
The 6 players in each group are then divided into 2 teams.
However, the catch is that players will not remain with the same team mates through out the competition.
After each match, players will be swapped around with other players in the same group to form a whole new team.

Faham?

That's basically how the competition goes.
The point system, well, that's a whole different story.

The objectives that were set for PTPY was simple:

To train a player to play with different team mates as well as to play in different positions on court.

To score as many goals as possible for your team and thus, enables you to proceed to the following round.

Some managed to fulfill the first objective but couldn't fulfill the next, in turn, couldn't proceed to the next round.
There are others who scored like crazy but yet lack the capacity to play with different players in different positions.
And there are some who, well, just whack the ball with no real direction.

It was a really good experience for all of us especially since the competition was the first of its kind.

The older boys strutted out their stuff on court.

And it was really refreshing to see all the young guns locking and loading their sticks on court too! Needless to say how loud all the parents were screaming and cheering for them!
They rocked the house - literally! :)

Alike all other competition, there will always be one who emerges out as the Champ.

In the inaugural Men's PTPY, Bryan Looi stood out amongst the rest and became the winner.

In the women's PTPY, Pei Li from Frontliners, claimed her position as the Champ.

1st or not, we have our very own Hawk that has made us proud!
JJ from Minden UniHawk, managed to bag in the silver medal!

Congratulations to all!
Winners or not, we all had fun in the good name of floorball.....

Even if we pulled a hamstring! ;)

Dalat Training is Back On!

Hey guys!!!

The Dalat Training is finally back on again!
Every Tuesday and Saturday night, 7pm-9pm.
For now, the training will still be open to all avid floorball players.
Come June, Tuesday's training will be catered solely for state players.
So, make sure you guys come while you can!!!
Squeeze every little juice of knowledge you can get before the door closes ;)

To all USM'ers who are in Penang, we hope to see you people there tomorrow night!

YouthWave 2008

And so, the competition has ended.
Both the men and women's team came back without any medals.
Still, we stood with our heads up high.

Indeed, the Hawks have improved in tremendous form as compared to last year's performance.
It was obvious - the women's team especially.
The Hawks sent two women's team, respectively captained by Suleen and Wai Wai.
Despite having many new kids on the block, the women definitely proved to be a deadly threat.
Their pace were much quicker, they were much more physical, their composure pulled through and their team spirit were on a high.
Suleen's team actually managed to get into the semi-finals, whereas Wai Wai team lost just by a slight goal difference.
Even though they lost in the semis, they showed great determination.
With Suleen's injured ankle, they were practically down to three men.
It was tough.
They lost...
But really, it didn't matter that much.
There was improvement and that proved something about our team.

The men's team did great as well.
The Hawks sent two men's team, led by Gary and another by Christopher.
Christopher's team somehow got themselves into the group of "death".
Moreover, it was their first time playing together as a team since Alumnis, Andrew Ng and Sadat Foster, only came back the night before the competition and therefore, had no prior training together.
Although they lost all 3, it was a well spent RM70 with good fun and team spirit.
Gary's team, on the other hand, made it far.
They surprised themselves by making it through into the quarter-finals!
The UniHawks Zirconium managed to hold down the Frontliners Revolution to a 0-0 draw.
However, they lost by penalty shoot-outs in the end which was, somewhat controversial.
Nonetheless, great job guys!!

As competitive as it can be in the court,

That's the spirit of sportsmanship there!

As fun as the competition was, it was somewhat poignant as well.
For many of the senior players, it was their last competitive floorball competition as an official Minden Underdawgs/UniHawks player.
As the semester closes in, many would be leaving back to their respective hometown by the end of this week.
The competition was definitely memorable in more ways than one.

A special tribute to Mervin Menon #12 - It was an inspiring performance from the senior player wearing the unmistakable number 12 jersey as he played his last competitive floorball match here in Penang. All the best in your future undertakings!

The Journey Begins: USM Alumni

After a week long of anticipation, we, the USM Alumni finally met the Ztecs.
The friendly ended up with slight agitation amongst the players, but nothing more, no worries.
As expected, tension will be there in a game.
However, good sportsmanship were displayed in both teams.

The match started off at 2.15pm.
R.C, being a rather small venue for a proper floorball match, we had to settle for 5 on 5 (including goalkeeper). We had fun nonetheless!

The final score stood 5-7, the Hawks lost.

For the UniHawks, it was more of the significant mark in the club's history that mattered - the birth of the USM Alumni team.
It's yet another step towards the development of the Minden UniHawks as a whole as well as the growth of the sports.

Keep it up Hawks!!!

As mentioned in Dalat's blog, there's a new site in town that's truly amazing.

Go check it out here.
It's called Floorball for all.

The birth of floorball in many other parts of the world can really be jaw-dropping.
In places like Brazil, Djibouti (yes, it's an existing country), Nepal and Bosnia-Herzegovina this fast-pace sport is spreading like wild fire.
I was browsing through the site and it made me appreciate the privileges that we have here in Malaysia...
Even if it means practising weekend and week out on an uneven basketball court ;)

You wanna talk about passion for floorball?

With the closing of Penang League 2008 last Saturday night, it seems like the whole floorball craze has cooled down after a long and intense 6 weeks of total floorball mania.
Moreover with the announcement that the usual Tuesdays and Saturdays training at Dalat International School will be off until the 26th, what else is in store for us??

No more floorball for another 2 weeks??? Can die lar....

Fret not!

The UniHawks will be having a friendly match against Silver team of Division two, Ztec 8cers this Sunday afternoon 2pm.
The venue is yet to be confirm.

The significance of this match will see the official opening of the Minden UniHawks/USM alumni floorball team. (Finally, there's a place for all the old folks of USM!) ;)

Not forgetting, YouthWave 2008 is just around the corner. In fact, it's just 10 days away!
The 'wave' of excitement is heatin' up!

For us, the UniHawks, it will be our second time round participating in this tournament.
Last year's experience was simply awesome.
How many teams will the Hawks be sending this time around?

2 from the men's team & 2 from the women's team.

Our goal?

To spring as many surprises as possible ;)
But for now... the focus is on the friendly this Sunday.

We did it guys!
Although it was our ONLY win, it meant more than just a win.
It showed sheer determination, discipline and dedication!
We were playing floorball and displayed what I loved most about our team - Team spirit.
And the weirdest thing was, the prediction of the score actually came true!
How bizarre...
Oh well, we can't complain can we? ;)

Sweet Maiden Victory

The Spartans played for the silver that would be theirs should they win and the UniHawks played to salvage their pride. Different objectives, same goal. Game on.

Notable change in the UniHawk camp was the fact that their usual keeper was unable to attend and therefore #14 Christopher had to stand in again.

Whistle was blown and they exchanged blows. With apparently nothing to lose, the Hawks attempted great floorball moves and should have taken the lead but for the solid pair of hands of the Spartans kungfu goalie. Right after that, the Hawks were stunned by 2 quick goals taken in swift succession. Thoughts of defeat would surely be running through their minds but it did not show in the game which they have gradually gained control of by then. Just before the break, Hawks levelled through good team play finished by #5 JJ and the teams went in tied at 2-2.

The Hawks came out blazing and slaughtered the Spartans with lots of counter-attacks and opportunist-goal poachings to fully capitalize on the many Spartans' blunders, scoring three without reply to cap a remarkable comeback from 2 goals down. The Spartans pulled a goal back towards the end but it was not Sparta. The night belonged to the victorious Hawks who, IMHO, thoroughly deserved their win.

Final score 5-3, which amazingly was what they wanted to play for before the match. And now that the UniHawks had finally won, they would thirst for more.

Too Content to Just Smell

Indeed, it was the best chance for UniHawks to win a game in the league given the opposing team just starting with one line and them more than two. However, all did not look too well for them as Innebandy opened the scoring with a goal courtesy of a central defensive mistake.

Earlier on, captain Sarah Ng made several notable changes to their usual lineup with #27 Sukri, #6 Kevin playing as a center and defender respectively while the iron lady herself took charge as a forward instead of her usual role as a playmaker.

UniHawks pressed on for an equalizer and they got it from #27 Sukri. Game on. Innebandy had known before the game that only a win is good enough to keep pace with league leader Contact and it is predicted that they would apply full pressure during the 1st half which they did and it got them another goal to bring into the second.

The UniHawks came out firing on all cylinders but to the wrong sides as they continued to display the lack of finishing which has worked so well against them all season, with Innebandy being content on lying low defensively and letting the Hawks flew all over them. A quick counter by an Innebandy forward resulted in a goal and some Contacts did not look too pleased.

It was all UniHawks towards the end of the game as they rallied around a goal by #6 Kevin but they, as the title implied, were just too eager and content to smell. A final score of 3-2 condemned them to the bottom of the standings which shall see them play in the second division the coming year.

Bottom line - with only pride to play for now, the UniHawks will try to score their maiden win against the Spartans this coming Saturday, which turns out to be the closing match for the league. Depending on the outcome of the Contact-Innebandy match, the Spartans will either treat it as a must-win game or a ceremonial one.

Pricey Blunders

The first few matches that the UniHawks played were lost mostly because they handed their opponents the matches on silver platters in the form of the inability to make good clearance, inability to keep possession and the inability to defend under pressure. The return match against the very much organized Contact FireAnts saw them being let down by similar blunders.

First half was relatively quiet, and to quote the FireAnts, it was as though the teams were taking a stroll in the park as both sides tried playing the ball around. With both teams centered on tactical rather than technical play, it was expected that they should ideally cancel each other out. Experience and sharpness in front of goal however gave FireAnts a 2 goal lead to bring to the second half. Kudos to Mervin for such a splendid goal after a clever pass from their skipper.

UniHawks came out very defensive in the second half and it didn't bode well for them as they found themselves conceding goal after goal for some poor defending. Ironic. FireAnts simply tore them to pieces but for the last 10 minutes in which UniHawks tried to stage a remarkable comeback which saw them getting 3 consolation goals.

FireAnts came out 10-4 winner, and with the match already lost before the last quarter, lapse of concentration and fatigue during the second half, which were the two main problems that plagued their campaign so far, continued to haunt them yet again and remain a main concern for team coach and captain Sarah Ng.

Rectify that and the UniHawks can give any team a run for their money.

Special mention - Stand-in keeper Christopher Koh kept the scoreline "relatively" low in his maiden goalkeeping experience. Job well done!

The war has ended.

15 courageous players stood with their heads up high having yet faced with another defeat against the brave 300.

A rather painful defeat because we were fighting for our first win or at least, get a draw out of it.
It just didn't happened for us.

The game was by far one of the most tiring game for us. The Spartans definitely have speedy runners along with good stamina too. Nonetheless, I believe we as a team, gave our best.
Although there were several mistakes and lost of focus on our part, I'm proud of the team spirit and morale that we have put in to support one another.

In the first period, we played rather good floorball. We managed to move the ball around rather than just hit-and-run. Our defence however, were caught off guard and ball watching several times. That led to the Spartans taking the lead, 2-0. We managed to keep our heads cool and even pulled a goal back before the first period ended, 2-1.

In the second period however, we couldn't regain the composure that we had in the first period. Although we had several goalmouth chances, we just couldn't get the right finishing to kill it off. Many times the ball just whisk passed the goalmouth with no one able to tap the ball in. Moreover, we didn't play the ball around as much as compared to the first period. We were lacking in movement and most of the time we just hit-and-run. Our eagerness to score and lack of patience cost us big time. When Frontliners scored their third goal, we lost our focus. That brought disastrous consequences on our team and eventually they took the game into their hands as we conceded another 3 goals.

Final score: 6-2

Being a UniHawk'er, I must admit that it's painful to lose 3 games in a row. It's painful because we enter the court, giving our 110% and yet, we can't seem to achieve what we hope to achieve at the end of the game. Having said all that, what's keeping me motivated is that I believe in my team. I believe that it is a good team with good players and with good team play and good team morale. Although we may not find our "niche" just yet, I believe we can only progress and not digress.

Ztec Wrecked...

...but the Eagles suffered and, to quote their own blog entry, the match could have gone either way. It started off promisingly for both teams I would say, with Ztec being more dangerous on the counter and the Eagles pushing up quite often. Ztec were, on most such occasion, let off the hook for some poor finishing in the Eagles and the game went into the half tied at 2-2.

Tempers were already flying all over the court, with lots of pushing and Innebandy! Co.'s coach, Linken, was quite sure somebody's going to get 2 in the second half. Good job to the referees and the respective team's coaches or captains for the wonderful talk during the 5 minute break because the game turned out quite clean in the second half. One great goal by Ztec's skipper Oliver after they conceded 2 in a span of few minutes promised a great comeback show that never quite materialized. The Eagles soared triumphant in their second consecutive game with a final score of 4-3.

To the audience perhaps, the goal that put a nail to Ztec's coffin was quite the wickedly witty goal, in which after a goal mouth scramble the ball was chipped over the keeper and dipped slowly in between Ztec's post.

It was certainly one of the best matches of the league, with the ball always at opposite corners in split seconds. Worth the travelling, and if a man of the match has to be chosen, Unihawk's would be Ztec's skipper for his undoubtedly great goal and his motivation of his team.

The Hawks played badly. All the hawks were trying too hard to fly or soar above the Storm that they forgot who and what they were playing for.

No matter.

The good thing, like what was commented by a fellow Hawk who's MIA in this tourney, is that UniHawks played their hearts out. And it's great to see new faces who can, in the future, weather the Storm.

UniHawks were swept aside 2 goals to 8 by Innebandy! Co.

But I can definitely say that these two goals were the firsts that we scored from open play.

Take note that training at Bakti will resume as usual, every Monday and Thursday, EXCEPT when it rains until 4.40pm, only then training will be cancelled.
If it rains heavily until 4pm and knowing that the court will not dry up by 5pm, training will be cancelled as well.

Good day people!

The Underdawgs are back, finally!
I know it's been a very long while since this blog has been updated by anyone.
Reason being, I (Christopher Koh) can't update this blog as much as I could last semester due to the very poor USM hotspot wireless services offered here in the hostel.
I'm very sorry on behalf of Minden UnderDawgs Floorball Club... Sorry!!!
Since I can't go online as much as I want to, I have delegated the job of blogging for the Underdawgs to fellow dawg, Kevin Ho. A million thank you to Kevin! ;)

There's definitely many interesting news to update you guys with since the APAC competition sometime last year. We will slowly bring forth these news to you from time to time. Fret not! The news will start overflowing once again! ;)
Just be sure to check out this blog from time to time!

One of the more significant news or changes that has taken place in our club this semester is the transition of our club name - Minden Underdawgs to Minden UniHawks.
We have decided that it's time for our club to step out of the "underdogs" mindset and to rise up from where we are right now, to push ourselves to achieve a higher goal and objective in the area of Floorball. Thus, we want to identify ourselves with the spirit of a Hawk, soaring high.
Having said that, we want you people to know that we will still be using Minden Underdawgs as our main club name for year 2008.
This year will be the transition period for our club.
So, buck up and rise up UnderDawgs!

For now, the hottest competition in town has just begun...

The Penang Floorball League 2008!

Yes, yes, yes! This exciting and intense competition kicked off, or should I say "sticked" off (lame*), almost two weeks back. The competition is split into two divisions:

Division 1: Contact Fireants, Minden UniHawks, Frontliners Spartans, and Innebandy! Co
Division 2: Dalat Eagles, Ztec 8cers, Frontliners Trojans, and Contact Bullets

Below are the fixtures and results of the games played so far

Minden UniHawks played their first game last Saturday night against the much experience team, Contact FireAnts.
As predicted, FireAnts proved lethal in their team play and years of experience, they were just a hand full for UniHawks to handle and they eventually won the game 5-1.
Having said that, the Hawks led by Captain Sarah Ng played wilfully with spirit and passion.
Captain Sarah said the Hawks, although lost 5-1 to FireAnts, played much better than expected and it was a good start for them.

UniHawks' following game will be against the much skillfull and talented team of players, Innebandy! Co. on the 4 March 2008.
I would strongly encourage all UniHawks, players or non-players, to come and support!
We definitely need all the cheers we can have to be there :)

ASIAN PACIFIC FLOORBALL COMPETITION

The Asian Pacific Floorball Competition (APAC) is just around the corner.
From the 4th-9th December 2007, Singapore will be the ground for this year's APAC.
For the past two months, players have been undergoing strenuous training every Tuesday and Saturday at Dalat International School.
Selection for the Malaysia floorball team is currently being made.
Countries all over Asia will be participating.
Teams to watch are Japan, Singapore and Australia.
Also, the Singapore Tour, organized by Penang Floorball Association will be going down for a few matches from the 9th-14th December 2007.

The End of Another Season, The Beginning of Many More.

It's yet the end of another semester/season for us.
Time has indeed been passing by rather swiftly.
This semester has very much been about promoting floorball and recruiting in members.
It's obvious that our club is growing very fast.
It's great!
Anyhow, I haven't had the time to blog about our recent competition outing at Dalat.

What can I say other than "JOB WELL DONE, MINDEN UNDERDAWGS!"
It was an awesome experience for all of us, especially the junior team.
I can say without a doubt and with great sincerity that we all played and gave our best.
Even though none of our teams made it through to the next round, it was a great effort from both teams.
It wasn't easy going up against professional teams and players, needless to say against the "Asian Junior Player of the Year".
But I'm truly encouraged by the team spirit.
Trailing 7-0 against the eventual champions of the competition was a great test for us.
I'm glad we managed to keep our heads up high in the midst of a heavy defeat.
But to me, it was the team spirit amongst our players that meant more to me than the numbers on the scoreboard.
Like it or not, we are a new club, only about a year old, and performance wise we are trailing behind many other teams. What we have, however, is something more important than skill, ball control or performance - Team Spirit.
And I saw that during the competition.

Yes, we didn't make it.
But fret not! There are many more competitions, friendlies and leagues to come.
What we ought to focus on is to continue improving ourselves, individually and as a team.
Please do practice at home if you do have a stick. It is crucial because coming for training once a week would not help you much. You have to put in your own initiative to push yourself if you want to reach a higher level.

So, if you guys are around from the 14-18 December 2007, please do drop by and help out! We need all the manpower that we can get to make this opportunity a success for the growth of this sport!

Attention!

This Thursday's training, we will be announcing the players who will be playing for Dalat League.
So please come.
Those who are not called, no worries. You are still very much welcomed and encouraged to join us for training as usual.

Aside from announcing the players, we will be going straight to business by tackling crucial teamwork, position and formation strategies.
So when you come this Thursday, be sure to be attentive because we really don't have much time.

I must say, I'm very much impressed by the commitment and the determination shown by all floorball members on Monday's stamina training at Tasik Harapan.
We managed to finish 4 1/2 rounds.
Although some members did stop half way through, I admire their determination to complete all 4 1/2 rounds in the end.
I decided to stretch our members a little more this time around by finishing of our training with 10 lunges, 10 sit-ups and 10 push-ups.
Most were screaming in pain... hehe... But I'm proud to say that all gave their 110% even though they were in pain!

Training this Thursday is on as usual.
VENUE: BAKTI PERMAI BASKETBALL COURT
TIME: 5PM-7PM
*Due to the current uncertain weather in Penang, take note that if it rains until 4.45pm, then training on Thursday will be cancel because the court would be too wet for drills and game.

Discipline, Dedication, Determination!

The past two weeks of training has been overwhelming!
Every time there's new faces around. It's great!
Finally, the heat of floorball is catching on in USM!
First and foremost, I want to take this opportunity to let you guys know that we are extremely excited and happy to have you in our team.
Don't worry if you're new at the game.
Just come for training and we promise you we'll give our best to train you people.

As much fun as we want floorball to be, there's a certain level of discipline and focus that we want to achieve.
We've mentioned in our previous training that we will be starting to look out for players for the upcoming Dallat League in September.
What we are looking for in a player is this three key things - The Three D's:

Discipline.
Dedication.
Determination.

We want to see these three attitudes in a player for it is essential for one to grow and progress to a higher level.
I want to encourage all of you to give your best at every training from now on.
You may just be the person we're looking for!

That's how I would describe our first training for year 2007/2008!
Banyaknya orang datang! Bagus... Bagus... :)
I think being one of the seniors, I can truly say on behalf of everyone else that it's really great to see so many new faces, 1st year ke, 2nd year ke mahupun master student!
Being a new club, it really encourages us to work even harder to make USM FLOORBALL TEAM a success when we see so many people turn up for training!

Did you guys enjoy yourselves? I'm pretty sure you all did!
For the newcomers, it'll be a little frustrating and hard for now but as time passes by, you guys will be a pro'! So don't give up and keep coming for training!

To the senior team, aiyoooo... Semua sudah karat lor... keke...
Well, no worries. We will definitely be training harder this semester as compared to last semester. The commitee will be constantly brainstorming for new drills and training routines for you guys in hope of improving and honing your skills.

The long break is finally here! Well, it's both good news and bad news for me. Good news is that no more studying for the next 2 months, we get to bum around and rot! Bad news is that no more floorball training for the next 2 months!! How can??!!! Hand and legs itchy lor... hehe... Anyhow, on behalf of the floorball committee, I would like to wish all of you a happy holiday! Spend it wisely... hehe... Oh, and yea, practice yourself if you can! Howdy' peeps!

WoW~
Those who went for the YouthWave Competition would know how well both our USM BOYS & GIRLS Team fare...
You people did really (& I mean REALLY) GREAT!
The girls, although it was their first time for them, played well overall.
I can very well say the same for the boys team!
Both team performed 110%.
I didn't play, so I saw both team played on the pitch.
And apparently, during the prize giving session last Sunday, Pastor Edward actually praised the USM Minden Underdawgs for our performance though' we didn't moved onto the quarter finals!
It's great guys!
Personally, I thought it was an awesome start for our floorball club!

Ok, now another reminder:
This Thursday, we'll be having an unofficial training session at
5pm, Bakti Permai.
Please try and come (ON TIME) although it's only an unofficial training ya'?
It'd be great if we can train for the last time this semester!

So sorry I haven't been updating our blog...
Been busy with preparation for exams! (yeeeea riiiite)...
Anyhow, this Saturday will be crunch time for some of us!
The Penang Youth Wave Floorball Competition is finally just round this weekend...
For those who are playing, all the best!

Last week's training was awesome.
There's definitely been loads of improvement and still,
there's much to work on!
Keep in up people!

Anyway, the highlight was still the very GOOD NEWS
concerning the future of our club.
The Officer in-charge of sports in USM has shown positive feedback last week.
Even better news is that we have the green light to send in proposal for a proper
training ground for us instead of going to Bakti Permai's Basketball Court and
disturb those basketballers.
So, let's just keep this club going by attending training every week with enthusiasm!
You've guys been doing a great job so far!

Key Points!

Fellow Floorball'ians!
I thought it would be great to highlight some key points about our game during our training yesterday. Do add on if there's any other key points that you think we should know ya'?
Feel free to comment as well!
After all, we are here to learn.. =)

KEY POINTS:

(1.) COMMUNICATION.
I think those who were in my team got it nicely lar... haha ;p
Personally, I felt most of us weren't communicating enough during the game.
Maybe some of you were scared to call for the ball or maybe shy,
but like it or not, communication is highly essential.

And since we don't know each other well enough yet, naturally we are not accustomed to each others style of playing.
Therefore, we need to call for the ball.
Don't expect people to pass to you if you don't shout for the ball.
Make your presence felt people! =)

(2.) Learn to PASS BACK
When I first started playing football,
my mentality was only about attacking.
Defend buat ape...
ATTACK! ATTACK! ATTACK!
But that's wrong people.

We have to learn to pass back.

What we tend to do is to get the ball and ambush the goal straight away.
So next week when you receive the ball, don't push yourself up all the way to the goal without any support behind you.
You'll just tire yourself out and possession will be lost.
Learn to keep possession.
Slowly push up together.
And learn to pass the ball around more as well.
This is where communication plays the crucial part.
So, you see, without communication you can't pass the ball around and without passing the ball around, you go no where!

(3.) AWARENESS
Learn to be aware of your surroundings -
who's beside you, who's behind you, who's running in front of you and so on...

If you're not aware of your surrounding, you'll find yourself more often than not, keeping the ball too long to yourself.
So remember, before you receive the ball, be aware of who's standing where, so that the moment you receive the ball you would know where to pass and where NOT to pass.
From what I observe, most of us panic when we receive the ball because we don't know what to do with it next!
So the next time you play, keep your eyes open and be aware even when you do not have the ball, keep your eyes open!!

(4.) OPEN UP THE GAME
Learn to open yourself up.
In other words, learn to run around on the court to find an empty spot for your team mates to pass.
Don't stand in an angle where a defender is able to intercept your team mates pass.

For instance, when a defender receives the ball, another player must support him by standing either in line with him, or behind him.
This would then give the defender the option to pass the ball around instead of holding it and having risk to lose the ball to the opponent.
Don't crowd around your own players.
Again, be AWARE!

Training is on as usual this coming Thursday.

Venue: Bakti Permai, Basketball Court.
Time: 5pm-7pm
Day: Thursday

We will be expecting new faces this week since we've been recruiting members in conjunction with our fund-raising project.

So to all newcomers,
WELCOME!
Don't worry, equipments will be provided.
All you need to do is to wear your sports attire,
and be there at Bakti Permai Basketball court!

Fund-Raising

Well well well,
the fund-raising project we've all been talking about is finally on the go!
Started yesterday (Monday, 5th Feb. 2007).
Everything went well in spite of the fear of not able to sell the shirts.
With the help that each and everyone of you rendered, we actually managed about
28 pieces of shirts!
Besides, it's only the first day... baru warm-up ma... =)

The committee started putting up the booth on Sunday night.
Yup, we have a great committee to make this whole fund-raising moving!
Bravo' people!

Hey people!

Recently, a few of us floorballers' had a short trip down south to KL for a floorball competition!
It was held in Universiti Malaya.
Yup, U.M have their own established floorball club together with facilities.
Fret not people!
We are working our way towards that same goal! =)
Anyway, we didn't win no trophy nor medals.
However, it was a good time of fun, fellowship and exposure for most of us.
And don't worry, we didn't do all that bad either!
We can't since we were representing PENANG! hehe...
In fact, we won 2 games out of 5!
Not too bad for a bunch of amateurs huh? =)
Ok ok,I shan't say much but let the photos we took during our short trip do the talking!

Hi Guys! Welcome to our very own blog/webpage!

I decided to put up a blog for our club for the simple reason that it would help us to keep you guys posted on the latest buzz regarding floorball...
E.g, from the latest competition to our training schedule.
Speaking bout the latest buzz, remember the announcement I made few weeks back
regarding the Fund-Raising?
Well, it's happening real soon!
Therefore, we would really appreciate it if you guys could spare some time
during that week to help us jaga' the booth whenever possible.
I'm sure you all are well aware that our floorball club is still new.
Members are still lacking.
